MY FAVOURITE SUMMER: REFORM THEATRE

VICTORIA HALL: 9/2/12

On a bitterly cold night the idea of a play which evokes summer seemed like a good idea – even if it were a summer where things didn’t go as planned. Unfortunately, the play didn’t seem to go as planned either! Trailed as funny and heart-warming I sadly felt that it was neither. It should have been, and the underlying idea of the culture clash when two different worlds collide and a liberal arty student takes on a summer job where his only companion is an unskilled artisan with Neanderthal attitudes certainly holds promise. But somehow it just failed to deliver and the play said nothing new. The central idea that student Dave had been desperately in love with his flat-mate and best friend Sarah similarly was unconvincing as there was no real chemistry between the two actors, and the fact that she would end up having a fling with workmate Melvyn was so obvious in terms of plotting that it meant there was no real tension in the second half. Slip-shod direction meant that the first half lost pace as it progressed and the device whereby the central character stepped out of role to narrate as author of the play became increasingly tedious as his delivery of the commentary lacked any real pensive quality. On a positive note the set was cleverly designed and versatile and the technical aspects, lighting and sound were used well to underscore the changes in mood and create atmosphere. There were also some moments which created a few laughs and some excellent throwaway lines of dialogue, but it was all too self-conscious and self-indulgent to be absorbing. The overall effect was of someone trying too hard to be funny and I swiftly found that I lost any interest in what were essentially two dimensional caricatures rather than rounded characters – consequently I ended up feeling not particularly concerned about what happened to any of them. A pity, as the 3 person cast were not without talent. This was particularly the case with Fiona Organ who worked hard to differentiate the various female roles and did produce some interesting cameos. The nagging problem was that although theoretically the play should have worked you got the feeling that any novelty and spark had long since evaporated from the production, leaving it little more than a collection of dated clichés.

CHRIS NEWMAN & MAIRE NI CHATHASAIGH: VICTORIA HALL

3 FEBRUARY, 2012

Born into a family of traditional Irish musicians, Maire has been playing the harp since childhood and is heavily influenced by traditional styles of playing – however it is when she pushes beyond the normal comfort zone of harp playing that the music really comes to life! Partnering her on stage is Chris Newman, who is a redoubtable guitarist who is at ease with a wide variety of styles. Blend the two together and you have a recipe for an amazing evening of entertainment with influences of bluegrass, jazz and swing melting seamlessly into traditional jigs and reels and haunting Irish airs. It is a mixture which on paper quite simply shouldn’t work – like fish, chips and chocolate or bacon, eggs and strawberries – and yet it does and in doing so it creates something totally unexpected and unforgettable! The programme contained an incredible assortment of styles with rapid changes of mood but throughout it all there was the constant sense of being in the presence of outstandingly skilled musicians and arrangers. Delightfully rippling jigs and reels of traditional origin were complemented by slow traditional 17th century pieces such as the delicate bridal air, Molly St George where the guitar accompaniment enhanced the overall depth of the piece. Then with a swift flick the mood changed and we were transported away from wintry Yorkshire to sunny sixties Spain with Chris Newman’s piece “The Lost Summer” or lost in bluegrass with “Tell her lies and feed her candy”, or swinging along to Newman’s “Swinging the Lead”. Traditional tunes from the harp tradition influenced newer creations such as “The Chestnut Tree”, showing to perfection not only wonderful versatility of the harp as an instrument but also demonstrating a real depth of understanding for the way in which the music it creates touches something deep inside both composer and listener. This was perhaps most seen in the haunting slow air “ The Fair Haired Boy” which held the audience enthralled. But it was also demonstrated in the joyously lively “Pheasant Feathers” which allowed for a range of variations on a theme. Whatever your taste, there was something to please and something to ponder on – and always something to open your eyes and ears to new possibilities.

THEATRE AD INFINITUM: TRANSLUNAR PARADISE

RICHARD WHITELEY THEATRE; 4/2/12

This multi-award winning show is totally unlike anything I had seen before: part mime, part dance but wholly captivating it held the audience entranced. You could literally have heard a pin drop – so intense was the silence and the emotional pull of what was happening on stage, and yet not a single word was spoken throughout the performance. This incredible performance relied solely on the skilful use of masks and movement, coupled with an incredible live accordion accompaniment to tell a powerful emotional story of loss and grief and the enduring power of love. In essence the storyline showed how after the death of his wife an elderly man escapes from his grief by creating a fantasy world based on reliving memories of their time together. Returning from the grave his wife’s ghost visits him to give one last loving gift – the strength to let go. There were no clichés, no sentimentalising and no attempts to soften the indescribable pain of loss – every gesture mattered; every movement was an insight into the closeness of the relationship and every sound underscored the raw emotion of the story. This was compelling viewing, though at times almost too painful to watch in its honesty and yet incredibly, hauntingly beautiful because of it. Technically it was absolutely superb; an absolute masterclass in the techniques of movement and mask and so incredibly real that you almost thought the facial expressions of the masks themselves changed. The accordion accompaniment was incredible, setting the mood for scenes and mimicking the sound of trains, heart monitors and, most poignantly, the woman’s dying breath. Not that it is all sadness, as the performance also celebrates the couple’s abiding love with a wonderful sequence showing the gaucheness of their first meeting; the joyous discovery of pregnancy and an incredibly wittily observed recreation of a major row with their movements becoming increasingly frenetic which contrasts elegantly with the gently satisfying opening sequence illustrating the tender, playful bickering which demonstrates an understanding of the need to preserve one another’s independence which can only develop within an enduring relationship. Without words this performance said far more about the nature of love and life than you could expect to find in a whole library of poetry. Its sheer beauty leaves you speechless and moved beyond measure.

CAROLINE HORTON: YOU’RE NOT LIKE THE OTHER GIRLS, CHRISSY

RICHARD WHITELEY THEATRE: 4/2/12

Chrissy is certainly not like other girls – she’s far more of a character than most! Short-sighted, stubborn and with the ability to silence even an Ambassador with a stare she is a redoubtable lady. In short she is a real bright spark and this delightfully engaging character first meets us on the Gare Du Nord station Paris shortly after the liberation of the city. She is there trying to get a ticket to England so that she can be reunited with her fiancé, Cyril and after surviving a five year separation as a result of the war, absolutely nothing is going to stop Christiane! This is wonderful one woman show, full of humour and clever observations and recreating the love story of how Chrissy, met and eventually married the love of her life – Cyril Horton. Sent to England to prevent her reading too much and improve her English she meets tongue-tied teacher Cyril at a tennis club in Cheadle. On his visit to Paris later that year he proposes and the stage is set for a wedding, until the war intervenes. The show is comprised of Chrissy’s re-telling of the events in the intervening years and is real roller-coaster ride with the emotional ups and downs of love at a distance, humorous re-telling of episodes of life in the French countryside and underneath it all the threat of living in an occupied country. There are no dramatic scene changes, the opening of suitcases creates new environments and no other characters take to the stage – however the talented actress contorts her face into a range of detailed expressions and reproduces their mannerisms to create the various individuals who pepper the story. Her timing is superb throughout and there are some very deft touches which give the production a magical feel; removing a letter from a bag which sets off a musical box to assist with a change of atmosphere; opening a case to release balloons which carry letters from Cyril in England and which when popped merge into the background noise of gunfire. Throughout the piece you are charmed by Chrissy, from the way in which she mangles English idioms (I’ll never quite get over the idea of a hot cat on a roof!) but also always slightly afraid for her in a world where orchards become killing fields and always suspect that her dreams are about to be shattered – in short, you genuinely care about what happens to her. Which is why the final revelation that this is actually based on the actress’s own family history is so welcome because by the end of the hour, you really do want Chrissy to get the happy ever after she so truly deserves. This is a wonderful show and a one which has been crafted with love and is a really fitting tribute to what was clearly a very remarkable lady who lived through an extraordinary time. If ever you happen to be stuck on a station for an hour, then you could do worse than be in the company of Chrissy.

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to inform you that following on from the success of our event in 2011, that the Jane Tomlinson’s Appeal ‘Walk For All’ Yorkshire Dales Walking Festival is coming back in 2012 to Settle. The event attracted over 2,000 people to the area last year, and this year we hope to grow the event, bringing more tourism and trade to the town.

I am writing to you early, as we felt last year proved that it is a fantastic opportunity for us to engage the local business community, whether its opening up for longer hours, or even looking to do something on the Market Place. We are looking to entice participants, and their families to stay in the area for longer, not only does it create a great buzz around the event, but it creates more business for your selves.

As with last year’s event, we are keen to engage with the local community in order to understand fully, the requirements of locals and businesses in the area whilst delivering an event with maximum benefit and minimum disruption. If you do have any feedback or suggestions that you feel could improve the event or reduce potential inconveniences, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Activities included: learning a New Year song and a Cantonese phrase, making lanterns, dramatising the legend of the Chinese zodiac, designing and making collage dragons, making and sampling Spring vegetable rolls and baking and eating small cakes, in which they had hidden their written messages. A good time was enjoyed by all participants. These workshops will link to others planned for later in the month, when pupils will meet some of the Chinese students from Giggleswick School.

FRIENDS OF SETTLE SWIMMING POOL

The Friends of Settle Swimming pool are anxiously seeking to recruit more helpers to assist with the recycling scheme which operates from the pool car-park. Funds raised from recycling waste card and paper helps to support the pool, a vital resource in the community which will suffer a 40% cut in its grant from CDC this coming year. At present the shortage of volunteers means that the recycling scheme is not staffed on Saturday afternoon or Sunday and may have to close one day a week. This is particularly worrying when the weekends are times when there are more people around and ideally the facility needs to be open. If you could spare an hour of your time to support the friends of the pool with this scheme then please contact 01729 825109 or leave details with volunteers at the pool.

ROTARY CHALLENGE SUCCESS

At this week’s meeting, Rotary Club of Settle President, Chris Wilcock, announced several pieces of good news –Bill Gates promised Rotary in 2007 to donate $355 million to their fight to eliminate Polio worldwide if they could raise $200 million themselves –they have just achieved that. From 350,000 cases worldwide in 1988 Polio has now come down to 650 in 2011 and India has had a complete year without a single case. Also Shelter Box, a Rotary based charity that this area has given most generously to, sent out 15,000 boxes last year and total UK donations were £5,288,331, an amazing sign of people’s generosity. The Club’s own Father Christmas Collection had raised over £4000, which the Club will be donating as usual to good causes in the local area. The annual Rotary Merry-go-Round is fast approaching –this is a 3 course meal with each course being in a different local restaurant, starting with a free drink in Giggleswick School Dining Hall at 7pm on Friday 10th February.Tickets are £18 and are now available from any member or from 01729 822445.
TOWNHEAD SURGERY

The surgery is extending its services this year with the launch of three new clinics to help patients. The first of these relates to Aneurysm Screening. From February 2012, male patients in their 65th year will be able to receive abdominal aortic screening at the Surgery. The clinics will be held on a Tuesday. Further information about how the service works is available from the NHS website www. aaa.screening.nhs.uk. Letters about this service will be sent out from mid-January onwards. Men over the age of 65 can self-refer for this service by contacting 01422 224204.

The second service is a series of NHS Health Checks. This is part of a new national scheme to help prevent the onset of certain conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes or kidney disease. Any patients between the ages of 40 and 74 who have not already been diagnosed with these conditions will be invited by letter for a check once every 5 years. It’s impossible to say that someone will or will not go on to develop one of these conditions but by taking early action it can help to lower the potential risk and improve an individual’s chances of living a healthier life. Anyone outside of this age range who has concerns about their health, should contact their doctor in the usual way. The third service is a Sexual Health Service aimed at anyone who is concerned that they may have a sexually transmitted infection or would simply like the reassurance of having a check up. The surgery can now offer tests and treatment, simply contact the surgery and request a sexual health appointment. People don’t have to be registered with the Practice and all calls are confidential.
