Congratulations, and also congratulations to the Y2/Y3 pupils, who represented the school in a recent football festival.
Message for All
My name is Tracy and I work for Skipton Financial Services Ltd, each year we choose local charities to support both with fund raising and volunteer hours. This year one of our chosen charities is IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services). As I am sure you can appreciate this is a very specialised area of support, thereby limiting the type of work we can volunteer to do.

IDAS as the name suggests, offers invaluable help and support to the victims (and the families) of Domestic Abuse. The North Yorkshire Dales is an area that very few referrals come from and IDAS believe that this is due to a lack of information, as such, I have been given the task of contacting as many agencies, Doctors, Dentists, nurseries, website administrators, local businesses, local councils, to name but a few, as possible. We are asking if you think you can help in any way, by putting a link on the local website, placing posters on local notice boards or flyers in local group meeting points. There is of course absolutely no obligation to do so but any help you feel you can give would be most appreciated.

I have included a link to the IDAS website, which will give you lots of information about the organisation – http://www.idas.org.uk/ . If you have any questions please feel free to contact myself either via email tracy.storton@skiptonfs.co.uk or by telephone on 01756 694614 during normal office hours.

Please accept my thanks for taking the time to read this.

Kind regards

Tracy

1. Sun 19 May:- 7pm: The Old Congregational Chapel at Tosside will be
celebrating its 200th Anniversary this Sunday: Mount Sion
Congregational Chapel, Tosside. It has a special heating system.
This special historic chapel has only 3 services a year. – so this
Sunday is a brilliant time to visit it!. It has an upstairs gallery.
The service will be led by WR Mitchell of Giggleswick (former
editor of the Dalesman).
Drive from Settle to the juntion at Tosside then continue to the
next building on the right (about 300 yards). There is a caravan parked outside.
Unfortunately (for me) this clashes with the Lambing Service at
Wenningside Farm, (between Clapham Station and Keasden) which takes
place in a big barn, and is a very good occasion and they have
delcious cakes afterwards..

***************************************************************************

4. This morning I attended Settle Big Breakfast where we had a talk
about STREETLINK- www.streetlink.org.uk :-

Concerned about someone sleeping rough?
Call 0300 500 0914 – “Please get in touch so we can connect rough
sleepers to local services.”

The Speaker Bob Owen told how more, and
different types of people, are becoming homeless.
1. Professional type people who lose their job, get into debt and
then end up “sofa hopping”
2. People who split up from their husband/wife and have nowhere to go and
end up sofa hopping, or sleeping in a shed.
3. 16 year olds who get thrown out of their home once their parents
can no longer claim child benefit. (People of 16 are considered old
enough to work)
4. Young people who have been in jail and come out of jail and are given £30
but have nowhere to live, and no friends.

Bob Owen (who lives in Wensleydale) said that once he had an
acquaintance friend who became homeless and Bob and his friends helped
him by letting him stay on their sofa for a week each. They thought
they were doing the best for him.

However they did not ring 0300 500 0914

It would have been much better if they had rung this number because
there is a raft of services available. If people are offered help
quickly when they become homeless, it is much easier to sort things
out. (They don’t have to accept help – it is just useful if they know
what is available)

——–
OPAL, in partnership with Forest Research and the Food and
May to investigate tree health.
This training session will provide an
introduction to the Tree Health Survey,
and some of the main pests and diseases
threatening trees in Britain. The session
health to help form an early warning
system for our nation’s trees and to train
others how to do so if they wish.
What the training will cover:
• Introduction to UK forests and tree health
• Pests and diseases – information and identification of key pests and
diseases affecting oak, ash and horse chestnut
• The OPAL Survey: its purpose and what we are trying to find out
• How to conduct the OPAL survey, including practical training
changed to 19 June)

After last year’s wash-out we will once again visit this interesting
area at the head of Kingsdale and hope for better weather. The area
consists of upland acidic habitats including heath and mire as well as
some disused limestone quarries so an interesting mix of plants should
be encountered. The records will eventually contribute to a flora for
vice-county 65 similar to Phyl Abbott’s Flora of Mid-west Yorkshire
which CCG contributed to. Park near High Moss between Kingsdale and
Two women from the Settle area decided to take matters into their own
hands when they couldn’t find any good comedy and drama for ladies of
a certain age to perform. Christine Hooley and Veronica Caperon have
written their own show “A Double Dose of Lippy Logic” which they will
present at the Grassington Festival Fringe in June.

When not treading the boards, Christine runs the local village shop
and Veronica is a professional photographer and copywriter. They draw
inspiration from everyday life: “There’s a comedy sketch about our
exploits as novice vegetable growers during last year’s wettest ever
summer. The audience can expect to come face to face with slugs and
other gastropods with that one!” says Christine. The trials and
tribulations of caring for ageing parents and young children are also
tackled in a couple of scenes.
The show is on Wednesday 26th June at 8pm at The Methodist Church in
Grassington as part of the Fringe programme. Tickets (£6) are
available from the Festival Box office tel: 01756 752691

Then on Thursday night I joined the CCG group at the wood near Burton

Home Grown Talent produces unique show
You can find up to date information at http://lippylogic.blogspot.co.uk.

St George’s Day was celebrated with a special meal, with a winning menu designed by Will Clay. Many thanks to the kitchen staff for this enjoyable themed meal. Pupils in Classes 2 and 3 recently enjoyed hosting a brief visit from some Y8 students from France, who are part of the exchange programme between Settle College and College St. Joseph, near Ingleton’s twin town of La Chapelle des Marais. Our pupils leant an amusing new French action rhyme and taught the French students some English songs. They also conversed with each other in both English and French. A team from Y5/Y6 took part in the North Craven Football tournament, which turned out to be a very exciting and tense occasion, as our team gained the same amount of points as Settle Primary’s A team. This resulted in a play-off, in order to determine which team played in the final; Settle’s team narrowly won the play-off, but here was some excellent playing from all members of the team. . Looking ahead, after Half Term, after-school Football sessions will re-commence on Fridays throughout June and will be led by Sport-S-Cool They will be open to all pupils from Reception to Y6.

With the rays from the setting sun filtering through the stained glass of the chapel’s “Creation Window”, Giggleswick Chapel provided both an appropriate and inspirational setting for this magnificent concert. From the opening notes through to the final chorus this was a truly outstanding performance by all concerned providing an extremely powerful and moving evening which was a genuine privilege to attend. Such perfection does not however happen by accident and therefore congratulations and thanks are especially owed to the dedication and enthusiasm of not only the singers and musicians but most particularly to the musical director, Nigel Waugh, whose energetic conducting was also a delight to watch. The Creation is a “big piece” in every sense, dealing with huge events and combining a joyous piece of theatrical spectacle with child-like wonder and awe at the unfolding story. The first real sense of this came within the opening minutes when the musical depiction of chaos gave way to a stunning choral outburst of “And there was light”. There are similar flashes of playful fun throughout the piece with comic musical representations of the various animals including contented cattle, roaring lions, buzzing insects, excitable horses and nimble stags and an unforgettable ” sinuous worm” which sent a ripple of amusement through the audience and was a masterstroke of interpretation by the gifted bass soloist, James Fisher. Elsewhere in the piece Haydn conjures up the soaring of the birds and the boisterous sea in “Rolling in foaming billows” so that quite literally the music is painting pictures with sound. This production was further blessed with three outstanding youthful soloists, Sarah Parkin (soprano), Timothy Langston (tenor) and the aforementioned James Fisher. Representing three angels witnessing the events – again highly appropriate beneath the angel encrusted chapel dome – they commentate on the events. The clarity and interpretative ability of the three performers meant that every nuance of the text was clear both in the narrative sections and the magnificent individual arias and duets. However just as “The Creation” is composed of three sections, so too is the actual make up of the piece and the excellence of the evening lay in the way that the soloists, orchestra and chorus came together with such precision and working as equals. This was very much a collaborative performance and highlighted once again the wonderful musicianship which is to be found in our community. The soloists sparkled, the orchestra was dynamic and the chorus provided an incredible accompanying tonal canvas so that they together wove a splendid creation.
