There are eight featured passengers in all – an amateur military historian and governess in First Class; a teacher in Second; a domestic servant and mother in Third; and three children. The book considers questions such as what were their earlier histories, their hopes and anxieties? Who survived, and why, and who perished? What happened to these people in the years after 1912? And what can we learn from their accounts? On the centenary of the sinking, it is the individual histories of twelve of the inhabitants of the small town that this book reconstructs. The book employs the rigorous, sceptical approach of the social historian, while at the same time retaining the vividness of the eye-witness account.
NOTES

Walks:

All walks start and finish at a station. Start times generally correspond with the arrival of a train from Leeds or Carlisle and may be subject to delay. The walk leader will meet you at the station. Walks marked (*t) start with a train ride, those marked (*b) include a bus ride. Finish times are approximate. Walkers are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the start and finish of each walk. All walks are free and do not require booking.

WALK GRADES:

Easy – Leisurely walks with regular stops for viewing & refreshment. Any climbs will be of modest gradient & length.

Moderate – These cater for the more experienced walkers. Expect a full day at a steady pace. You may well encounter steeper gradients & more difficult terrain.

Strenuous – A full day’s walk at a brisk pace, you probably will encounter steep slopes and difficult terrain. The walk may also include yomping and/or short scrambles. There could be time constraints.

The pace of the walk is appropriate to the distance and the available time. We ask that walkers accept the pace set. Anyone getting ahead of the leader may be deemed to have left the walk. Good footwear & adequate clothing (including waterproofs) are essential. Please carry enough food & drink for the day. The walk leader reserves the right to refuse participation to anyone who is judged to be not fit or adequately clothed or equipped for the walk concerned, and to vary the walk if conditions so dictate. Under 18 year olds to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Well behaved dogs on a lead only please.

Whilst walk leaders take every care, your comfort and safety are your own responsibility.

Talks:

There is a small charge to cover room hire.

Music:

Most music sessions run through the afternoon and late into the evening, with breaks. It is your responsibly to make your way to the station for the last departing trains. There is no charge for admittance, but bucket collections will be made towards musicians’ expenses.

And what can we learn from their accounts? On the centenary of the sinking, it is the individual histories of twelve of the inhabitants of the small town that this book reconstructs.
Great British Menu is back and the fight is on as some of the nation’s greatest chefs battle for the chance to cook a glittering Olympic banquet.

This summer, another chapter will be added to Britain’s sporting history when London hosts the summer Olympic Games. Great British Menu: The Olympic Feast will give the chefs a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a special banquet to celebrate the Games coming to our shores and showcase contemporary British cooking at its absolute best.

Hosted by Sir Steve Redgrave, the Olympic Feast will honour the hopes and achievements of the country’s sporting heroes, and it will be a glorious celebration of Britain’s culinary talents.

The chefs’ task is to create a menu that captures the Olympic spirit – food that is breathtaking and awe-inspiring. Every great Olympian pushes their discipline on to new levels of excellence and that is the challenge for the 2012 Great British Menu chefs – can they create world-class, groundbreaking food that will celebrate the Olympic ideal?

This week it’s the battle of the North East chefs – returning contender Stephanie Moon and newcomers Colin McGurran and Charlie Lakin. All of them are determined to knock out their rivals in the race to the banquet. Here, they kick things off with their starters; which one is going to be first off the blocks? Will it be Stephanie’s ‘get set’ goat’s cheese, Charlie’s wild rabbit with carrot and Douglas fir needles, or Colin’s ‘quail in the woods’?

Good Luck to her !!
