RAILWAY WALKS

Four walks are planned in the coming week. On Saturday 11 June there is a 10 mile strenuous walk on Baugh Fell leaving Garsdale Station at 10.21 and  returning from Dent.  As a service bus will be used from Sedbergh to Dent the number of places will be limited so please ring 01943 875 445 in advance. There are also two walks scheduled as part of the “Get Walking” series. These are suitable for families but not buggies or pushchairs as there will be stiles to negotiate.  On Saturday there is an 8 mile moderate walk from Horton to Clapham  leaving Horton-in-Ribblesdale at11.54.  On Sunday 12 June there will be a 6 mile easy walk along  The Corpse Way  . This will leave Ribblehead at 10.28 & return to Ribblehead later in the day connecting with the service bus to and from Muker.  Finally, also on Sat 11 Jun  there is a 9 mile moderately strenuous walk from Ribblehead to Horton via Ingleborough  9m  leaving Ribblehead at 09.15 and returning from Horton-in-Ribblesdale. No reservation is needed for these latter 3 walks but all for all walks participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear.  Details of all walks can  be found at www.foscl.org.uk

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

If you ever have time on your hands or you want to do something to help in your community but don’t quite know where to begin then the answer will soon be on your doorstep. Every Thursday afternoon a volunteer will be available in Settle library to assist you with information about volunteering opportunities in the area.  This service will be available between 2-4pm and will be by appointment. To make an appointment contact 01756 701648. There will also be assistance available during this time for any enquiries and guidance on how to trace family history and research family trees.

VICTORIA HALL

On June 10 there will be a visit from Sam Carter, winner of the radio 2 Folk Award for best newcomer. This is part of the tour to launch his new CD, “How the City Sings”. On Friday 24 June there will be a performance by the six-piece folk, roots and rock n roll combo that is the Jon Palmer Acoustic Band. GALLERY ON THE GREEN

The gallery is currently staging an exhibition of silk paintings by local artist Christine Carradice. The countryside of the Dales – the limestone crags, green fields, drystone walls, barns, farmhouses and flowers – have all been captured on silk. Christine’s paintings, which are popular at the Dales National Park shops, are inspired by the Dales. The exhibition runs until Saturday July 23.

SETTLE SAUNTER

The 8th annual Rotary Settle Saunter takes place on 11 June. There are four routes on offer (9, 12, 16 and 22 miles) to accommodate a wide range of abilities with  stages of the route, though not all, flagged with tape to help with navigation. A comprehensive route description is available to all entrants. The routes can either be walked or run and will take in picturesque rural villages and hamlets and swathes of intoxicating countryside. There are checkpoints with light refreshments along the way and a hot savoury meal is provided at the end. The saunter is open to all, but the expectation is that participants have a reasonable level of fitness to complete their chosen route. Youngsters under 18 are most welcome on the three shorter routes but we  safeguarding rules do apply. Entries can be made in advance or on the day (an additional £1 surcharge applies) and the entrance fee is £12 per person, but group and age concessions are available. This year the funds raised by this event will be shared between Settle Swimming Pool, Clapham Cave Rescue Organisation and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Registration, start & finish on the day is at the Victoria Hall, Kirkgate, Settle, BD24 9DZ [GR 818 637]. Registration is between 07.30 – 0815 and the start, for both walkers and runners, is 08.30. VOICES OF CRAVEN

Voices of Craven: Communities in Chorus is a project across the area in which local singing groups have come together to sing, coached by Tom Leech, the director of the diocese of Leeds singing programme. Throughout June there will be a series of concerts by local professional soloists and musicians culminating in a grand finale where all will perform together. Tickets are available via 01756 7488080.  On Monday 13 June Sarah will return to her home ground to  perform in a “last night of the proms” style concert celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday at St Alkelda’s church in Giggleswick. On Wednesday 22 June there will be an evening of Community Singing at Holy Ascension church, Settle  with John Bell of the Iona Community. The Grand Finale is a concert at Giggleswick School Chapel on 25 June which will feature local choirs and a small orchestra.

THE FOLLY

On Sunday, June 12 at 1.30pm there will be a special WW1 centenary cricket match at Settle Cricket Ground between Settle and Skipton. The match commemorates a match played near the front line at Fleurbaix in France in June 1915 by the men of the 1/6th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s (WR) Regiment in 1914-16. All welcome.

SETTLE AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY

On Wednesday June 15th Settle Amateur Operatic Society begin the auditions for their annual performance. This year they will be performing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s first musical, “The Likes of Us”, which is the story of Dr Barnardo. This informal get together will take place in the Old Court House on Station Road at  7.30pm. This will be followed by workshop sessions which  will take place in the parish hall of St Mary and St Michael on Kirkgate, at 7pm on Monday 20 and Wednesday 22 June. All are welcome and new faces are always greatly appreciated.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

The next Amnesty letter writing session will take place at Friends Meeting House in Kirkgate on 15 June between 5-8pm. Individuals are invited to come along and write a letter to assist in Amnesty’s work. Details are provided of cases and help is given with letter writing. For further details contact – 01729 268912.

SETTLE ORCHESTRA

Settle Orchestra’s summer concerts will feature three outstanding young soloists who are past or present members of the orchestra : Ellen Buller (Flute), Patrick Martin (Trombone) and Max Heaton (Marimba). The concerts will take place at Christ Church, Skipton on June 18th and Richard Whiteley Theatre, Giggleswick on June 25th. Both concerts commence at 7.30pm. FOLK FIDDLE WORKSHOPS

The second in a series of folk fiddle workshops will take place at Friends Meeting House, Kirkgate between 2-5pm on 18 June The cost for the workshop is £20 and it is aimed at anyone who is interested in learning how to play the fiddle in “folk style” (as opposed to classical violin) and an ability to read music is not essential to these sessions. The fee will cover tuition by a qualified and experienced professional, refreshments and copies of both sheet music and recordings of the music for you to take home to use to practice. MESSY CHURCH

This month messy church goes “on safari” to Malham Tarn on 19 June. Transport leaves St John’s Church at 2.30pm. There will be a chance to share a picnic and enjoy the outdoors. Messy church activities are free but there will be an opportunity to contribute to costs of food and transport if you wish. SETTLE PHOTOGRAPHIC GROUP

The group meeting on Monday 20 June, will be a members discussion night on the topic of “What do we do with our Images?” This will take place at 7.30pm at Townhead Court and it is hoped that the discussion will include a pooling of ideas for options for collating, organising and viewing photographs. The theme for the gallery that evening will be “Reflections”.

THE FOLLY

There are plans afoot at The Folly and everyone is invited to take time out on Monday 20 June, between 3-8pm to find out more at a drop-in session at The Folly. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of Settle’s only grade 1 listed building and to examine plans to transform the building into a major heritage and arts attraction and community facility. Come along and have your say and share your ideas and feedback.

SETTLE STORIES

Settle Stories is holding a very special event in June when renowned Belgian storyteller and musician, Iwan Kushka, visits the town to present “True Moon Tales” a story-concert for adults. True Moon Tales are Half Truth Lies – welcome to the land of myth and true stories that never happened. Come and experience the ancient Indian Legend of ‘The Transported Heads’ – a tale in which two boys meet one girl and loose their hearts (and heads) in the process. A journey of poetic flight into the collective intelligence of the old tales in a highly atmospheric blend of story and music in Journeys into the Underworld, ecstatic lovers, death and rebirth, as Kushka brings with him the haunting sounds of the Iranian frame drum and the Armenian Duduk. He is joined by guitarist William Benzies and violinist Becky Doe. FLOWER POT FESTIVAL


It’s time to start thinking about flowerpots! Everyone is invited to help brighten up the town ready for the annual flowerpot festival in July. The festival aims to involve local organisations, businesses and individuals in the hope of raising a smile by decorating the town with quirky flowerpot characters.  If you would like to take part and have any queries or need some help then contact 01729 824431 or 07739 144732. It is hoped to have all displays in place by 25 June so that a full town trail can be drawn up.

SILENT AUCTION

A silent auction will be held at Castlebergh Drill hall on 25 June, between 11 and 5. The auction provides a chance to invest not only in a piece of art but also in the future of the young people in the town. Settle Scouts are currently fund-raising to improve their Drill Hall premises to help not only local scouts but to also make them available to the community. They’ve teamed up with a number of local prominent and renowned artists for a special There will be refreshments served throughout the day and arts and crafts for young people.

TRAMPS

The next foreign film session at Victoria Hall will take place on 29 June when the film will be “Le Meraviglie” (The Wonders). This will be in Italian with English subtitles. The film focuses on the life of a family living a back to nature existence in rural Tuscany and how the arrival of a film crew from a TV reality show disrupts their life. The show starts at 7.45 and admission is £5.

SETTLE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The first day of summer and we were given a presentation with slides by Martin Davies of the National Trust in the Dales. He described how an anonymous donor of a million pounds, some of which came to the Dales, went some way towards restoring eroded peat beds, so important in holding back the volume of water now threatening our rivers and towns. To the same end he described how the National Trust are planting native trees in gullies leading to the rivers and replacing conifers in similar areas. Forthcoming W I events include support for the Settle v Skipton cricket match on 12 June and the July  Great Yorkshire Show at which WI always provide the refreshments throughout the three days. Jeanne Carr thanked the group for her bursary to visit Denman College and described her enjoyable weekend visiting Royal castles on the Thames and learning their histories. The competition for a personal photo of a National Trust site was well supported.

CREATIVE WRITING

Two special creative writing events are being planned in the coming months, and as both are expected to be popular and spaces are limited early booking is advisable. The first event will take place in Clapham on Wednesday August 10th at 2.00pm.

This workshop, is listed in the Dales Millennium Trust programme as a walk, and will begin with a walk in the woods and continue into a comfortable seated writing session. It will be possible to buy a cup of tea to help the writing flow.  During the walk the aim is to look, listen, touch, smell and come alive to ourselves as part of nature, as the mammals we are. This will then be used to inform writing which may take the form of poetry or story or, perhaps. simple remembering.  The group will be lead by an experienced and published writer and there will be guidance to get started.  The event is suitable for beginners and for more advanced writers who want to hone their skills.  All proceeds from this event will go the Dales Millennium Trust with whom bookings can be made. The second event is a creative writing workshop at Bolton Abbey Tea Cottage and will take place on Wednesday 14 September between 10.30-4.00. During this session there will be opportunities to write either prose or poetry – or both, according to choice, under the guidance of two experienced tutors and writers.  Jean Stevens and Jean Harrison have both published collections of poetry.  Jean Harrison is also the author of a novel. while Jean Stevens has also written plays and filmscripts. Both beginners and more experienced writers welcome.  If you have never tried your hand before but read avidly you may discover how much the attempt to write can enhance the pleasure of reading. The Tea Cottage will lay on morning coffee, a two-course lunch and tea before departure. Total cost for the day is £28.00. GIGGLESWICK

RICHARD WHITELEY THEATRE

There will be a concert by the Lancaster Singers at Giggleswick School Chapel on 11 June. Entitled “Across the Pond: Music for a Summer Evening”  the programme will feature music from England, America and Canada performed both with accompaniment and a cappella. Tickets cost £10, with students in full time education free. For further information contact: 01729 893180.  On June 12th there will be a showing of “Dad’s Army” by community cinemas. This commences at 3.30pm and admission is £5.50.  On 18 June Tim Figgins will perform at the theatre. Tim’s music has begun to establish a regular fan base and is starting to be heard on Radio 2 and BBC Introducing. He will be appearing at the Isle of Wight Festival later in the year.

GIGGLESWICK SCHOOL

Giggleswick School will be holding an open evening on 13 June with tours of the school from 5.30pm. Then on June 20 the Junior department is hosting a “stay and play” session for under 5s between 10-11am. Under 5s and their parents/carers are invited to come along and join in a session of play with the chance for the adults to enjoy coffee and a chat.
