New Art at The Gallery on the Green

Retired teacher presents Chinese brush paintings for Settle’s Gallery on the Green

Local retired teacher, Chris Newson, will present the next exhibition at Settle’s Gallery on the Green, featuring her newly learned skill in Chinese brush painting. This collection of captivating small scale paintings feature plants, flowers and animals in the traditional Chinese style and are produced using original techniques and materials. The exhibition has been prepared especially for the Gallery on the Green, with small scale postcard sized paintings to suit the intimate phone box setting.

Chris (who formerly taught in Settle) retired in 2008 from a successful 30 years in education and has a new life involving some work as a Consultant Head, lots of world travelling with her husband and time to enjoy life. She runs courses on retirement planning and doesn’t know how she ever found time to go to work. She is a committed lifelong learner and is humbled to be called a local artist.

Using her time, creative energy and enthusiasm in trying a number of arts and craft skills she found success with Chinese brush painting. She learns from professionals at the Yorkshire Chinese Brush painting group and is now a member of the National Association.  She is honoured to have worked with Swee Tan Caseley, Kaili Fu, Eric Ng and many other experienced teachers including Anne Allen who first encouraged her. www.cbpsyorks.co.uk Chris is still a “learner” after almost 2 years. She  has developed a range of skills and has built on her existing IT  awareness to include cloud technology (drop box),using digital camera and images on “picasa”, scanners, laminators and printers in abundance.

Many of Chris’s works are made into cards at the “3rd Tuesday Group” at Embsay Mill, thanks to Elaine Waring. The oriental style backing papers are provided by Katy at Simon Taylor crafts. Linda (favourite hairdresser) sells the cards at the Hairshop in Embsay. Chris has led a workshop in the local library and had a sales table in Skipton town hall . She won the Card Invitation category in the Embsay horticultural show. Her name in the Craven Herald caused wry smiles as she is in no danger of becoming parochial.  Chris has brush painted with Aireview Infant school relearning how to  work 4 year olds and some of their work is included in the exhibition.
