Settle Library Heritage Fair

North Yorkshire Libraries – Local and Community History month

North Yorkshire has a long and interesting history – places, people and events deeply rooted in the past. Across the county, libraries will celebrate this in May for Local and Community History month, part of a national initiative to encourage everyone to discover the excitement and interest of uncovering the history surrounding us. A range of events and opportunities for everyone to enjoy will include heritage days, talks, quizzes, exhibitions and family history help sessions.

On Wednesday 11 May, Settle Library will hold a Heritage Fair, where groups from all over North Craven will be exhibiting. Family History experts will be on hand to help people trace their ancestors and there will be talks by local historians. Speakers include Sita Brand, director of Settle Stories, on the W. R. Mitchell archive, Bob Swallow, author and local historian, who will talk on the building of the Settle Carlisle railway and John Asher, local historian, who will speak on Conscientious Objectors of Settle and North Craven. The event is free, but talks are £2 each.

For family historians, there will be the chance to see what your ancestors were doing on the eve of the Second World War on Wednesday 18th May as we run a session on the newly released 1939 Register, which is available on FindMyPast and can be accessed in all North Yorkshire libraries for free.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for Library and Information Services, said: “There is much for people to enjoy in learning about history. Often, it is not just the large, national events but the small local events that fascinate most, especially when it comes to the history of your own family or village. Libraries have a wealth of material and expertise to help you in your own treasure hunt. We hope you will celebrate Local and Community History Month with us and discover your own unique stories.”
