ILLUSTRATED TALK

On 8 February, Tony Hennigan will present an illustrated talk at the Richard Whiteley Theatre. The title of the talk is “End to End” and Tony will recount his journey from John of Groats to Lands End with his dog as a means of raising funds for Children in Need last year.  Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of  St Mary and St Michael Catholic Church

GALLERY ON THE GREEN

The new exhibition at the Gallery on the Green  features the work of local retired teacher, Chris Newson, and demonstrates her newly learned skill in Chinese brush painting. The exhibition has been prepared especially for the Gallery on the Green, with small scale postcard sized paintings to suit the intimate phone box setting. The exhibition runs until 23^rd March 2013.

SKY WATCH

The National Trust invite you to join them for a special event at Malham Tarn on 9 February at 8pm. The “Night Sky at Malham Tarn” event will provide a chance to marvel at the wonders of the night sky within the glorious setting at Malham Tarn – a beginner’s guide to identifying some of the constellations. The event is weather dependent so if the stars are not visible then participants will undertake a night walk instead. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear. ROTARY MERRY GO ROUND

The annual Merry Go Round will take place on Friday 15^th February 2013 and will involve a number of local pubs and restaurants. The cost will be £18.50 for a 3 course meal and the evening will start start at 7pm in Giggleswick Dining Hall . This fun event  provides participants with a good meal out as well as providing extra trade for the local pubs and raises funds for  charities.  The restaurants taking part this year are:  The Lion, The Maypole, Talbot Arms, Ravenous, Boars Head, Gamecock, Craven Heifer, Craven Arms, Harts Head and The Plough. The charities that are being supported this year are: Settle Swimming Pool, Air Ambulance and Mary’s Meals. Mary’s Meals feeds children in in the third world a hot meal at school for only £10.70 for a whole school year, meaning that they go to school, get an education and so hopefully a job, and so become self-sufficient and not reliant on aid. SHROVE TUESDAY

Settle and Giggleswick Mothers’ Union invite you to come along and join them for pancakes on Shrove Tuesday,  12 February 2013  at Settle Parish Church. The Mothers’ Union will be serving coffee, tea plus Pancakes and fillings from 10am onwards. Scones etc will also be available. The proceeds will go towards Mothers’ Union fund-raising for their ‘Make a Mother’s Day’ appeal.

THE BIG BREAKFAST

The next Big Breakfast will take place on 16 February at Friends Meeting House at 8.30am, cost £3. Tea and Coffee will be available from 8.15am. The speaker will be Jean Asher

THREE PEAKS FOLK

The Three Peaks Folk club meets on 16 February at Settle Social Club, commencing at 9pm. This is a free event featuring local singers and visitors are always welcome to come along and join in.

SNOWDROP SUNDAY

Settle Parish Church will mark Snowdrop Sunday on 17 February and invite you to come along and join them from 12 noon till 4pm to view the array of snowdrops around the churchyard and enjoy homemade soup and rolls, cakes and scones . Hopefully the snowdrops will be in full bloom not hidden under snow and the sun will shine!

HALF TERM HOLIDAY CLUB

Chipmonks at Settle Primary School will be running a half-term holiday club from 19 February to 22 February at a cost of £12 per day with a discount of £40 for all 4 days. There will be a range of fun and fitness activities on offer and there will also be sessions on building and flying kites. For details contact 01729 822370

VICTORIA HALL

WORKSHOP

The February craft workshop session of the year will take place on 23 February at Friends Meeting House between 10am and noon.  The session will focus on using  Caran D’ache watercolour pencils. The session cost £10, including the cost of basic materials as well as coffee and biscuits. To reserve a place contact  01729 823434/824386 (evenings only).

ILLUSTRATED TALK

Settle Amateur Operatic Society invite you to an illustrated talk entitled: “Settle: Looking Back in Time”.  The speaker at this event will be John Reid. The talk will take place at The Old Court House on 22nd February at 7.30pm and admission is £4, to include a glass of wine or coffee and biscuits.  Tickets are available from committee members in advance if required. The following morning, 23 February there will be at coffee morning at the same venue between 10-12.30 and there will be an exhibition of photographs on display,  linked to the previous evening’s talk.

FIRST AID COURSE

On 25th Feb there will be a 1 day emergency first aid course at Victoria Hall. This covers the majority of first aid requirements for most people. The cost is £65, including a book and certificate valid for 3 years. Contact dalestraining@gmail.com for details and to book .

OPEN MIC NIGHT

There will be an open mic night on 25 February at the Talbot Arms from 8pm onwards. Anyone interested in performing should contact 01729 823924 as soon as possible to reserve a slot.

GIGGLESWICK

RICHARD WHITELEY THEATRE

On 10 February the community cinema season continues with Rise of the Guardians. The performance will start at 3.30pm and tickets cost £4.90. Please note that on 17 March the cinema presentation will be “Quartet”, and not “Les Miserables” as previously advertised.   On 14 February there will be an organ recital at Giggleswick Chapel by Langcliffe based organist, Paul Fisher. This will include works by Bach, Haydn, Berveiller, Karg-Elert and some of his own compositions.
