VICTORIA HALL

2013 holds an amazing mixture of events to appeal to all tastes and ages. Tickets are already available and selling fast for a return visit by Ultravox and BandAid star, Midge Ure, who will be performing at Victoria Hall on 15 February. February also sees the return of favourites Lip Service theatre and Moishe’s Bagel. JAZZ NIGHT

Liven up a cold winter night with some red hot jazz. The Black Horse Jazzmen play every Tuesday evening between  8-10.30pm in The Lion at Settle. Admission free and sitters in welcome.

 

GALLERY ON THE GREEN

The decorations may be packed away but there is still time to visit the Caribbean Christmas at The Gallery on The Green. The installation features a back drop of tropical island images, with a tableau re-creating some very interesting (and edible) buried treasure.. This will be in place until 26 January

 

SETTLE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

At the January meeting Heather Slater gave a fascinating talk on being A Nanny in Saudi Arabia and a vote of thanks was given by Joy Calvert. The annual lunch will be at The Lion in Settle on Wednesday 16 January at 12 noon for 12.30. On Thursday 17 January the walking group will meet at Settle Market Place at 9.20 am to catch the ‘bus to Clapham. (Further details may be obtained from Pat Whitton). The next meeting will be on Wednesday 6 February at 2 pm when the speaker will be Bob Pickersgill whose subject is A Story of the Saxophone. The competition is for a Winter Photograph.

 

 

SETTLE VOICES

Settle Voices Community Choir  have recommenced their sessions in the Friends Meeting House, Kirkgate on Mondaysat 1pm.  Janet Russell is again leading the group after her sabbatical break. New members are very welcome. For more information visit http://www.settlevoices.org.uk/.

 

IYENGAR YOGA

Start the new year with a new outlook and try a session of Iyengar Yoga for free before you book to join a class. Classes take place on Mondays at Friends Meeting House with a mixed ability group running from 12.30 – 14.00 and a beginners group running from 14.15 – 15.15. On Tuesdays there will be sessions at Townhead Court. From 19.30-21.00 there is a mixed ability session and from 18.15-19.15 there is a beginners session. KAREN’S KEEP FIT

Karen’s keep fit classes return on Mondays at the former Settle Middle School building at 7.30pm.  Classes are suitable for all abilities and this term will feature new Latin and Power exercises as part of the mixed programme. Classes cost £4 per session with a special incentive reduction for regular attenders. All sessions are led by fully experienced, qualified and insured instructors. CHURCHES TOGETHER

Churches Together in Settle and District will be holding a unity service at Settle Parish Church at 7.30pm on Jan 18th toe mark the start of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. A 24/7 prayer vigil event will then run from 8.30pm through to 8pm on Jan 19th. On Sunday 20th there will be a united service at 3pm at St Mary and St Michael. On Tuesday 22nd there will be a lunch in support of Christian Aid at St John’s Church Hall from noon to 1.30pm. Friends Meeting House will hold a midweek meeting on Wednesday 23rd at 2.30pm and on Friday at 7.30pm there will be a service of prayer for the year ahead at St John’s Methodist Church. On Saturday 26th at 7.30pm there will be a Barn-dance in St John’s Hall. Food will be served an tickets cost £7/£1. Please book ahead for this event to assist with catering: contact 01729 822311.

 

THE BIG BREAKFAST

The next big breakfast will be on Saturday, 19  Jan at Friends Meeting House at 8.30am. Coffee & tea are available from 8.15am, and the breakfast and talk are over by approximately 9.30am.The speaker will be Rev Norman Young on the subject of “From Fitter to Vicar”.  To reserve a place please contact John or Edith on 01729 825285. THREE PEAKS FOLK

The Three Peaks Folk club meets on Jan 19th at Settle Social Club, commencing at 9pm. This is a free event featuring local singers and visitors are always welcome to come along and join in.

 

SETTLE PHOTOGRAPHIC GROUP

The next group meeting will take place at Townhead Court at 7.30pm on January 21st. Artist Sue Deighton will give a presentation entitled “The Wow Factor” which will include some detailed criticism of members’ pictures. Members are invited to submit one picture (20 from the membership as a whole) on any topic – including previously shown pictures or pictures which already feature in the group gallery. New members and visitors welcome. Cost £3.

SETTLE AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY

Settle Amateur Operatic Society are delighted to announce that they have again secured the services of Blackpool Tower Organist, John Bowdler, for a return visit to Settle in March 2013. He will be playing for a dance at Settle College on 23rd March and tickets are now on sale. They cost £7.50, including supper and are available from 01729 824038 / 822364.

EMBROIDERY CLASSES

Pippa Foulds is offering hand embroidery classes open to beginners or those with more experience who wish to improve their knowledge of traditional hand embroidery skills.  Pippa has a achieved a Certificate with Distinction from the Royal School of Needlework and has exhibited work with the RSN. The classes will be limited to six people at any one time in order to allow for one to one tuition and attention. For details contact 07896 645816.

 

GIGGLESWICK

RICHARD WHITELEY THEATRE

The theatre kicks of its 2013 Community Cinema programme with a showing of the recent James Bond adventure “Skyfall” on Sunday 13 January at 3.30pm. Tickets cost £4.90 via 01729 893180.  Please note that if you are booking for two films in the season you can purchase seats for the two films for £9. Forthcoming films include Rise of the Guardians in February, Les Miserables in March and Wreck it Ralph in April.
