GUIDED WALKS

There will be four guided walks arranged by Friends of Settle-Carlisle line this weekend. On Saturday 19 September there is an 8 mile, moderately strenuous walk from Dent to Ribblehead. This departs from Dent at 10.38.  As part of the Get walking programme and  Pennine Way celebrations, there is a walk on 19 September from Kirkby Malham to Malham. This is an 8 mile moderate walk and links with the service bus from Skipton. Participants should alight at Skipton at 9.26 and are advised that Dales Rambler tickets can be purchased to combine the cost of train and bus journeys.  Also on Saturday  19 as part of the Pennine Way celebration there is an 11 mile moderately strenuous walk from Ribblehead to Hawes 1 departing from Ribblehead at 10.06 and returning via Garsdale, with a link to the service bus from Hawes to Garsdale.  On Sunday 20 September there is an 11 mile strenuous walk in Swaledale taking in Great Shunner. This will leave Ribblehead at 10.27 and link with service buses to Hawes and from Muker.  No reservation is necessary  for this walk but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. SETTLE KWEZANA LINK

Pupils at Settle  recently were thanked by Kwezana for the photo story which they sent them, showing pictures of the pupils and staff and also views of Settle. They enjoyed finding out about the town and being able to see the various buildings such as the water tower, play barn, Victoria Hall and the station. It is hoped that they will soon send a similar photo story of Kwezana

SETTLE VOICES

A reminder that Settle Voices has resumed it’s meetings after the summer break. The choir meets every Monday afternoon between 1-3pm at Friends Meeting House and is open to all. For details contact Liz on 01729 823777.

SETTLE OPERATIC SOCIETY

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. The production will be staged at Victoria Hall during the week 26-31 October at 7.30pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. LADIES BADMINTON

Ladies badminton sessions take place every week on Wednesdays between 7.30-9pm at Settle College. These are mixed ability sessions and beginners are always welcome. For further details contact 01729 824249/840601.

VICTORIA HALL

On September 17 Holy Moly and the Crackers will take to the stage for an evening of folky, waltz-y  punky, fiddle flying, Cajun fun with rousing hoe-downs ensuring that you get up and dance. Music of an entirely different genre on September 26 when West Yorkshire Savoyards return with their production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic Savoy opera “The Gondoliers”.  Benji Kirkpatrick, from Bellowhead, brings his show “Bendrix” to Settle on September 27th. The first half of the show is Benji’s own material, with the second half entirely dedicated to  an exploration of the music of Jimi Hendrix material set against a specially commissioned visual backdrop by Shropshire-based artist Esther Thorpe. This section comprises classic songs by the legendary guitarist, adapted for bouzouki, banjo and mandolin so that by stripping back the layers of electric guitar, the solos and the psychedelia the songs appear in their pure form, to reveal Hendrix as a sensitive songwriter  On September 25 the unusual and critically acclaimed play “Beryl – a romance on two wheels” will be performed,  celebrating the life of Beryl Burton – the greatest woman on two wheels. Yorkshire woman Beryl Burton was five times world pursuit champion, twice road racing champion and twelve times national champion. She was one of the most astonishing sports people ever to have lived. The play tells the story of Beryl’s life, from working on a rhubarb farm to becoming the best British cycling all-rounder for 25 consecutive years and, in 1967, setting a 12 hour time-trial which has not been broken to this day. NORTH RIBBLESDALE RUFC

A family evening is being held at the rugby club on 18 September to mark the England v Fiji match. There will be fun rugby games, a face painting, food, a happy hour bar and the opportunity to watch the match live on large screens.  The event will commence at 6.30pm.

3 PEAKS FOLK CLUB

Three Peaks Folk Club will mark “Sally Day” this year on 19 September with a special night of music and songs which were favourites of folk club founder, Sally Wright. The evening commences at Settle Social club at 8.30pm and admission is £5. Guest artist for the evening is Anna Shannon.

MESSY CHURCH

The next messy church session will take place on Sunday, 20 September between 3.30-5.30 at St John’s Hall. Messy church is a free event, including a meal, with an opportunity to donate towards costs. There will be craft activities and a chance for families to come together and celebrate together.

IYENGAR YOGA

A new term of Iyengar Yoga Sessions will commence on 21 September. The Monday sessions take place at Friends Meeting House at 12.30-2.00 for mixed ability and 2.15-3.30 for beginners.  The Tuesday session takes place at the school of dance, Station Road between 7-8.30 and is a mixed ability session. BLOOD DONORS

SETTLE AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB

The next meeting, on 23 September, will take the form of a Jacobs Join lunch and members plant sale. The group will meet at Town Head Court at 1pm.

NOT THE ROYAL VARIETY SHOW

A call out to all would-be performers who’d like to take part in a special fund-raising event on 11 and 12 December. Settle Amateur Operatic Society and Victoria Hall are working together to stage “Not the Royal Variety Show”. There will be a preliminary meeting for all interested in taking part in the event on 28 September at 6.30pm at The Old Court House, Station Road.

TRAMPS

The next foreign film showing by TRAMPS will take place on 30 September at Victoria Hall at 7.45pm. Admission is £5.Bombón: El Perro is a gently humorous road movie with a 52-year-old and the large dog he is given in lieu of payment. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles

AGE UK

On Thursday 1st October 2015 at from 2pm – 4pm at Victoria Hall in Settle, Age UK North Craven will be hosting a unique event to mark UK Older People’s Day. The aim of the event is to celebrate the contribution made to the community by people in later life. There will be information from local organisations on display as well as information on how to make the most of the services on offer from Age UK North Craven and other community groups at work in Settle and the surrounding areas.  There will also be refreshments provided. The event is free; aimed at the community and at people working with older people either as volunteers or as professionals  Our special guests are the Golden Oldies (known as the GOs to their friends).  The GOs started out as an over 50’s light exercise group and now provide entertainment, costumed and choreographed song, fun and dance all over the North West. Members of the group say being part of the GOs has given them fun, purpose and a new lease of life. They will be at the core of the event with a stage display. ORGAN RECITAL

Settle Parish church will host an organ recital by Paul Fisher on Saturday, 3 October at 7.30pm. Entitled “Melodies All Sorts” the programme will feature melodies from classical and popular music arranged for organ including Mozart, Vangelis, Strauss, Fisher and others. There will be a refreshment interval and admission is free with  a retiring collection of donations to the organ fund

CHARITY DANCE

DARTS EXHIBITION

Advance notice of an event of special interest to all darts fans. On 18 October Settle Social Club will be hosting an exhibition by Eric Bristow. The event commences at noon and admission is £5. There will also be a raffle in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

SETTLE STORIES

Bookings are now being taken at Victoria Hall for Settle Stories “Star Party” on 10 October.  This will be a full day event commencing at 11am and running till late and will feature a range of story tellers and astronomers throughout the day which will be meeting of storytellers and astronomers suitable for adults and children. A collaboration between Settle Stories, Manchester Metropolitan University & Bradford Astronomical Society., the day’s highlights  will include: a rocket workshop, a chance to visit a Star Lab with astronomers and storytellers and a new star story event with international award winning storyteller – Cassandra Wye.
