Have a Happy New Year

From Settle Website and Settle  and District Chamber of Trade

Churches together in Settle and District are hosting a holiday club at St John’s Church Hall on 2 January entitled “Shine”. This is a free activity for 5-11 year olds and will run from 10-3.  Please bring along a packed lunch.  Contact 07931 511652 for details.

A reminder that the Christmas exhibition in the Gallery on the Green will run until 18 January and this year  features a truly communal effort in a knitted version of ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’. The windows of the phone box will feature panels from the Flag maker’s 12 Days of Christmas collection and there will be the usual children’s treats.

Following its Christmas break the community choir will start its singing sessions again on Monday, 13th January from 1pm to 3pm in the Friends Meeting House, Kirkgate, Settle. New members are very welcome. For more information ring 01729 823777 or visit the website

The next showing by TRAMPS will take place at Victoria Hall on 29 January at 7.45. The film will be La Source des Femmes which tells of how a group of Moroccan women take drastic action to persuade their husbands to lay a pipe line to solve a water crisis.

Scottish Country Dance sessions take place every Thursday evening at St John’s Hall between 7.30-9.30pm. New members are always welcome and there is no need to bring a partner. Sessions cost £4 and there is a discount if a term is paid in advance.  For details contact 015242 41451.

It’s never too early to start enjoying sport and thinking about Wimbledon! Tennis Aces offers LA Mini-tennis coaching to juniors every Sunday morning. The 9-10am session is for 4-8 year olds, the 10-11am session is for 8&9 year olds and the 11- noon session is for 10-11 year olds. Sessions cost £6 per child and take place in Giggleswick Sports Hall.  For further details contact 01729 825100 or 07816878321.

The latest classes by the Alison King School of Dance are “strictly” for children!  Starting on 4 January the school will be offering ballroom, Latin and Classical Sequence dancing sessions for children only  at the Richard Whiteley Theatre.  Classes cost £3.50 and the 12-1pm slot will cater for 3-6 year olds, the 1-2pm slot will cater for 7-11 year olds and the 2-3pm slot is for 12+. Partners are not necessary and parents are invited to stay and observe if they wish.  Ballroom dancing is an ideal way for children  to socialise and make friends as well as to learn poise, balance, flexibility and develop stamina, a range of motion and self esteem. For details of these classes and adult classes in the area contact  01729 840118 or 07857 532511
