Simon Mayor’s Mandolinquents Sat 14th June Victoria Hall, Kirkgate, Settle, North Yorkshire, BD24 9DZ

Simon Mayor, Gerald Garcia, Hilary James & Richard Collins

The Mandolinquents feature everything from hot swing and ragtime instrumentals from the mandolin orchestras of the 1930s: Irving Berlin, Mozart, Ravel and Tchaikovsky to lively reels and beautiful traditional Irish airs to Chinese and Brazilian folk tunes.
All this played with infectious fun, off-beat humour and stunning virtuosity on mandolin, mandola, mandocello, mandobass and classical guitar, with the occasional burst of song or fiddle.

Simon Mayor – mandolin, violin, guitar, fiddle player, guitarist, composer, wit, Simon Mayor is best known as one of the world’s leading mandolinists, and his groundbreaking recordings, radio series and books have helped to put the mandolin back on the UK map. His live performances are a riot of humorous anecdotes and off-the-cuff wit alongside dazzling musicianship. He has produced a wealth of teaching books and DVDs, including ‘The Mandolin Tutor’, which is now widely regarded as the standard work for the instrument.

Hilary James – vocals, mandobass. Among the hundreds of other applicants for the lucrative job of mandobass player in The Mandolinquents, none could also offer the ‘elegant singing’ (Daily Telegraph) of Hilary James: a voice quintessentially English but easily crossing the great musical divides from British ballads to blues and Berlioz. She has recorded four critically acclaimed solo albums. And if the wind is in the right direction you might catch her doing a step dance as well! Offstage, she’s a busy artist and, with Simon Mayor, has presented music education programmes for national BBC Radio and has written over 60 children’s songs.

Richard Collins – mandolin, banjo, mandobass – Richard Collins first picked up a guitar at the age of nine and within a couple of years was stunningly adept at a number of stringed instruments. Now revered as a mandolinist and guitarist, he is also one of the hottest (and subtlest) 5 string banjo players around. He tours with visiting American artists and has even been dragged back across the Atlantic for session work in Nashville. His latest project is a flatpick guitar teaching DVD which he managed to record in between Mandolinquents commitments and playing with his own ‘A Band Like Alice’ A man with a sense of humour, he can lay claim to the world’s largest repertoire of self-deprecating banjo jokes.

Gerald Garcia – classical guitar – In a typical twenty five hour day, the tireless Mr. Garcia crams in a host of extra-mandolinquential activity. A prolific composer and arranger for the classical guitar, he has also written and arranged many orchestral works. Currently Musical Director of the National Youth Guitar Ensemble, he has also worked with the outreach sections of the English National Opera and Kent Opera. He has recorded six solo albums for the Naxos label, and is featured on several other recordings on the Meridian and BMG labels. In 1975 he was one of the first western guitarists to play in China. His culinary skills are legendary and his pre-concert green chilli eating competitions with Mr. Collins regularly draw huge crowds.
