The Northern Chamber Orchestra presents a fantastic concert of Baroque Greats & Romantic Masters at Settle Victoria Hall on Friday 3 October

Fresh from its summer success at Buxton Festival, the Northern Chamber Orchestra is preparing for its first concert of the autumn season – at Settle Victoria Hall on Friday, 3 October, 7.30pm. Featuring the music of Baroque greats such as Handel, Bach and Vivaldi, through to Romantic masters (via a little Rossini!) – Dvorak, Grieg and Bruckner – the concert, sponsored by Booths, will take its North Yorkshire audience through a wonderfully eclectic, musical experience.
It’s a year since the NCO last performed at Settle’s historic concert and entertainment hall and the orchestra is thrilled to be back. Jonathan Thackeray, NCO General Manager, said: “I know our Artistic Director, Nicholas Ward (who is also our soloist for this concert) and NCO’s players really enjoy performing at Settle’s Victorian Music Hall. It’s such a characterful and evocative place. For the latest concert, we’ve picked a programme full of contrasts, with wonderful melodies throughout.”
The concert features majestic music from three Baroque greats, Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. Bach wrote only a few concertos for violin but they are all special and are considered to be ‘essential listening’. His Violin Concerto in A minor stands out as the most moving and melancholic, and the stunning solo violin line, in the second movement, is something to savour. Handel’s Concerto Grosso, Opus 6 no 12 is the last in his series of ‘12 Grand Concertos’ and its third movement contains one of the most beautiful melodies ever written by the composer. Violin Concerto in D, ‘Il Grosso Mogul’ is amongst Vivaldi’s most passionate and virtuosic concertos.
Rossini’s precociously witty String Sonata no 3 in C is full of individualistic style, while Dvorak whisks us off to the ‘Romantic’ era with his Two Waltzes and Grieg maintains the lively tempo with Two Nordic Dances, inspired by the folk traditions of his native Norway. Bruckner’s expressively spiritual Locus Iste (performed purely as an orchestral version by NCO but originally a choral work) is in gentle and delicious contrast to the often dissonant and disturbing genius of his symphonies.
Booths has sponsored £2,000 to this year’s performance as part of a pledged donation of £10,000 to the Northern Chamber Orchestra over 5 years, now in its final year. Neil Croskery, Store Manager at Settle Booths, explains; “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Northern Chamber Orchestra for the fifth year running, enabling them to bring a diverse and exciting orchestral performance to Settle which will be enjoyed by many local residents and music lovers across the North”.
