Spirit of the Line

Spirit of the Line – the everyday magic of the Settle-Carlisle railway now showing at The World’s Smallest Art Gallery?

Simon Whalley,  local artist and photographer,  based at his studio at Brougham Hall near Penrith,  is currently exhibiting ‘Spirit of the Line’ a series documenting  the everyday magic from a year spent documenting the life of the Settle-Carlisle Railway when Simon was resident photographer on the line.

Gallery on the Green is a former BT red telephone box, and has hosted over 20 exhibitions right on the village green.

Simon says:  ‘I’m thrilled to be exhibiting in this quirky space – the same space where Brian May had an exhibition a few years ago!  I, like many other people feel a strong connection with ‘the Line’ and I wanted to highlight it.  My book ‘Spirit of the Line’ was published in April as part of the celebration to commemorate 25 years since the line was reprieved from closure. The historic announcement that the line had a future, after years when it faced closure, was announced on 11th April 1989, and I’ve celebrated many of the local folk who played an important part in fighting that closure. It’s been a really special year capturing that atmosphere and the people involved with it all.’

The exhibition is on now until 26th July 2014.  Its location is 10 minutes walk from the market place at Settle,  Sat Nav:  BD24 9RB  www.galleryonthegreen.org.uk
