FLOWERPOT TRAIL

A reminder that the Flowerpot trail and quiz sheets are now available from outlets across the town. Sheets cost £1 and are on sale at the Tourist Information Centre, Lay of the Land, Lamberts newsagents, The Playbarn, The House that Jack Built, Speight and Watsons, Sweet Corner and The Folly. The trail will run throughout August.

SCOTTISH DANCE

There will be a Scottish Dance at St John’s Hall on 31 July at 7.30pm. This is open to all comers of every level. Regular Scottish Dancing sessions will recommence in September. For details contact 015242 41451.

GUIDED WALKS

There will be  series of guided walks on August 2nd arranged by the Friends of Settle-Carlisle line. The first of these will be from Gargrave to Malham. This is a 7 mile moderate walk leaving from Gargrave at 11.05 and returning by service bus from Malham to Skipton.  A 9 mile moderate walk in the area of Penyghent will leave from Horton in Ribblesdale at 10.56. This is a circular route. A strenuous 14 mile walk will depart from Kirkby Stephen at 10.34 and conclude at Appleby. Booking in advance is not required for these walks but it is essential to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink and to be correctly equipped. VICTORIA HALL

On August 2nd there will be a chance to dance the evening away with Andy Kershaw’s Global Dance Night, commencing at 8pm.    Over the summer there will be a special season of family films, shown in conjunction with TRAMPS. The first of these is “Matilda” on 6 August then on 30 August there will be a showing of “Babe”. “One hundred and one dalmations” will be shown on 3 September.  All of the family films start at 7pm and cost £5 for adults and £4 for under 13s. FASHION SALE

Ahernes are holding their end of season blitz clearance at Victoria Hall on 2 August from 10am -2pm. All ladieswear on the blitz rail will be sold at half the sale price marked on the ticket.

CHARITY DANCE

STRAWBERRY TEA

Giggleswick WI invite you to join them for a strawberry cream tea in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care on August 2nd at Friend’s Meeting House, Settle. The event will run from 2-4pm and admission is £3. The event has been sponsored by Rodda’s cream.

SETTLE BOWLING CLUB

Settle Bowling Club are running their “non-bowlers” annual doubles competition on Sunday, 3 August starting at 11am. This competition is known as the “Novice Shield” and is sponsored by Settle Social Club. it is open to players of any age. Entry is £5 per pair. There are cash prizes for first, second and third. Bowling woods are supplied by the club. Pie and peas are provided at a small cost. THE FOLLY

A reminder that there are currently two local exhibitions being staged at The Folly. The first, ‘War Beckons’: tracks how the people of North Craven prepared for war in 1914 and includes memorabilia loaned by local families. The second, ‘Journeys Through a Family Archive’, explores  how the Rileys of Settle meticulously recorded and communicated the details of their everyday lives, work and – often adventurous – travels and achievements through writing, drawing and photography over a period of nearly 80 years. Frederic Riley was the author of several definitive full-length books on this area of Yorkshire, including his most ambitious work “The Ribble from its Source to the Sea”, published 100 years ago this year. This exhibition is a must for everyone who enjoys comparing and contrasting ‘then’ and ‘now’    The Folly is open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 12.30 pm – 4.30pm  and on Tuesdays, 10.30 am – 4.30 pm

HOLIDAY CLUB

This summer’s holiday club, organised by Churches Together in Settle and District,  will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings on 12-14 August between 10am to noon each day. SETTLE KWEZANA LINK

While Settle pupils are enjoying their Summer holidays, pupils in Kwezana have just returned to school after their winter break and are now in the second term of their school year. They have been telling of their activities, including the chance to visit family and friends in the cities: highlights of Andisiwe’s visit to her family in East London included visiting shopping malls, playing with relatives, buying new toys and games and eating out – including at McDonalds!  Pupils also passed on their best wishes to members of Year 6 in Settle who will be moving up to Settle College after the holiday and said how much they’ve enjoyed working together.

The group are holding their enrollment session on 14 August at 10.30am at Victoria Hall. There will be a chance to chat over coffee and catch up with friends and to find out about the activities on offer for the new term.

NORTH CRAVEN HERITAGE TRUST:

On Thursday 7 August there will be a guided walk entitled ‘18^th Century roads west of Settle’ led by Robert Clarke.  This is a moderate walk of about 3 miles.  Boots/stout shoes needed.  Meet at Giggleswick Station car park at 2.00 pm. Members of the general public are welcome to attend this event at a cost of £2 per person.

SETTLE PHOTOGRAPHIC GROUP

Settle Photographic Group will once again be organising a Town Trail of framed photographs in local shop windows throughout August.  This year there are about 90 pictures to hunt down and look at. They are all centred around the middle of Settle and provide some interesting entertainment for both visitors and residents. Maps can be obtained free of charge from the TIC, and some local shops, or downloaded from www.settlephotos.org. Following the Town Trail, at the Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday to Monday, there will be the Annual Settle Photographic Group Exhibition. This will be in the Village Hall in Clapham, free entry daily from 11am to 5pm and refreshments will be available.

SETTLE ROTARY CLUB ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF COMPETITION

Settle Rotary Club’s Annual Charity Competition will be held on Friday August 22^nd at Bentham Golf Club for teams of four players.

GIGGLESWICK

GIGGLESWICK HORTICULTURAL SHOW

Giggleswick Horticultural Society’s 73rd annual show will be held on Saturday, 9th August at Giggleswick Junior School Pavilion.  The show, which is open to the public at 1.30pm, will be officially opened at 2pm by Emma Lonsdale who is British Freestyle Skiing Champion and who represented Britain in this year’s Winter Olympics.  Admission is £1.50 for adults and free for children. Schedules and entry forms are now available from Lamberts Newsagents, Speight and Watson Newsagents, Settle Tourist Information Centre, Lay of the Land, The Garden Shed and The Tuck Shop, Giggleswick. Any profits from the show are donated to local charities and last year £700 was distributed amongst five charities.

GIGGLESWICK WI
