Fri 1 Sept: 2pm: 1st of Month Walk On Board Walk at Malham Tarn Fen (or 1.30pm if meeting at Settle returning to Settle by 5pm – contact me if you want a lift) ) Meet at the Quarry Carpark (now labelled when you get there) on the north side of the tarn, on the road to Arncliffe, but just before you get to the entrance to Malham Tarn buildings. This is a First of the month Craven Conservation Group – Churches Together walk – Open to anyone interested. Led by myself who is – into flowers, lichens, mosses, sedges – but very open to contributions from people who know about birds butterflies etc.
August is a great time to see flowers of uncommon plants such as the beautiful white Grass of Parnassus and purple Sawwort; Leaves of the insectivorous plants Sundew and Bladderwort will be there (and maybe find their flowers too) Many Fen and Bog plants flower late in the year (i.e. in August rather than May) . Ragged Robin; Marsh Cinquefoil, Marsh Lousewort Devil’s Bit Scabious, Commn Valerian and a host of others. Maybe even some late Northern Marsh Orchids.
Malham Tarn and Fen and wetlands is a site of international importance.
Walk length = 1 and a half miles – but shorter 1/3 mile option on the boards is available for any who want a shorter walk.

Award-winning author and artist, Jackie Morris, and Stained Glass Artist and Illustrator, Tamsin Abbott, have announced a one-night-only appearance in Kirkby Lonsdale. At the event, these two highly-acclaimed artists will talk about their new book Wild Folk, a beautifully illustrated sequence of seven tales, marking their first book-length collaboration. Fresh from their sell-out appearances in the south of England, this is their only live event in the North.
