1. Call  (to people near Settle) for volunteers for Settle Community Christmas Day Meal  (25 December) to be held at Settle Methodist Church and Hall.
Due to Covid in Settle (2020 and 2021, and even 2022) we have had no Settle Community Christmas Day Meal for three years. This last week, I have had many people saying that they wished there was a meal again this year.   I wonder about organising one: – provided we get enough volunteers by this Friday 8 Dec:  The main requirement is to have two (or three) people capable of organising and doing the cooking. They can have assistants if they wish, for cooking, serving and buying food from amongst our general volunteers.  I feel confident we will get the volunteers for all the other jobs. It would also be useful for me to have an assistant to help keep a record of the guests who have applied to come.
I write more about the proposed meal at the end of this email.  Could you volunteer?

Langcliffe on Sat 2 Dec –  the Christmas Coffee Morning at the Institute

1. Call for volunteers for Settle Community Christmas Day Meal  (25 December). (held at Settle Methodist Church and Hall)
Due to Covid in Settle (2020 and 2021, and even 2022) we had no Settle Community Christmas Day Meal
for three years.
This last week, I have had many people saying that they wished there was a meal again this year.   I have decided  to organise one – provided we get enough volunteers by this Friday 8 Dec:  The main requirement is to have two (or three) people capable or organising and doing the cooking (they can have assistants if they wish, for cooking, serving and buying food).  I feel confident we will get the volunteers for all the other jobs. It would also be useful for me to have an assistant to help keep a record of the guests who have applied to come.
I write more about the proposed meal at the end of this email.  Could you volunteer? Please email me at judithallinson22@gmail.com
I will put this out on Settle Chat Facebook shortly too.

Volunteers needed (in order of importance).
1. Two cooks – or Chief Cook and assistant cook
2. Person to help me with Participants list, contacting guests etc.
—————
3. General assistants /volunteers (who will help others, or do a variety of little jobs)
4. Volunteer drivers
5. Table decorations / cutlery organiser etc.
6. Volunteer to see if we can get donations from various Settle Shops.

If you are wondering whether to commit yourself either as a volunteer or as a guest, here is the  draft
Programme:
1. Volunteers Meeting this Friday 8 Dec at 5.30-6.30pm pm At Settle Methodist Church for those volunteers who can come.  (I appreciate that not all can come)
(This date just might get changed slightly if the key volunteers request a different time)
2. Possible second planning meeting to decide who buys what
3. Meeting on either morning of 23rd Dec or more likely afternoon of Sun 24 Dec to prepare room and food and presents
4. Christmas Day meal: Cooks and volunteers come slightly earlier otherwise guests come at 11.45

11.45. Coffee, chat, carols;  Lunch 12.45pm  followed by various activities; Light Tea 3.30pm. Finish c.4.30pm.

I hope we can hold the price to £10-00 again this year (paid by both volunteers and guests: children £5-00)- We will review this at the meeting on Friday… I see we have had 50% inflation over the 13 years since 2020.
Because I am late in planning this, I suspect we will only get about 30 or 40 guests this year (whereas in 2019 we had almost 70 including helpers and including a few take away meals). “Guests” may include old people or single people but they also include couples or triples who would rather join in with others on Christmas Day.
——–
If we can’t get two people prepared to do/organise the cooking then we will not be able to organise the meal.
We do need to build a bit of spare capacity into the volunteer team to allow for volunteers getting covid.. I hope no-one gets it.
—————————-

I appreciate I am rather late in announcing that the meal will happen.

I would be really grateful to hear of people who might like to help in 12 months time in 2024. (Even if it is only a 90% chance they will be able to help). I ran the event for ten years from 2010 to 2019, and would be very happy if someone else came in to take it on. We are grateful that Settle Methodist Church makes their facilities available.

Best wishes from

Judith Allinson
