Gallery on the Green

Settle’s Gallery on the Green returns to the theme of one of the most iconic, and perhaps photographed, railways in the UK – the Settle-Carlisle Railway.

The exhibition of photos by Simon Whalley ‘Spirit of the Line’ opens on Saturday 28th June 2014. The emphasis of Simon’s exhibition concentrates on an aspect of the railway other than the trains and tunnels. His theme is the railway and its everyday magic, its relationship with the environment and the people who use it.  Simon spent a year as resident photographer on the line in order to capture as many aspects of this famous route as possible.

In a series of photographs, also available in a recently published book, the many elements of the line are captured and portrayed in often hauntingly beautiful scenes. The book also commemorates those people who fought to save the line from being closed during the 1980’s – an almost unthinkable act now in 2014.

Simon is based in Penrith at Brougham Hall where he has a gallery and photographic studio.
